Artist: The artist is not identified on the item, nor in the volume. The sales catalog entry for the volume notes that the watercolor is included but does not mention an artist. The drawing is similar in design to an illustration by Henry Fuseli.
Drawing is outlined in ink and rough pencil markings can be seen through the watercolor. Item is neither labeled nor signed.
History: Fuseli's illustration was engraved by Neagle and published, in the 1805 edition of Shakespeare's Works, by F. & C. Rivington of London. The anonymous drawing found in this volume differs from the Fuseli design in minor details as well as in some stylistic aspects, though the shape and placement of the figures is almost identical. FSL has a separate copy of the engraving (ART File S528k1b no. 10) as well as a copy of the 1805 edition.
Provenance: Item has been inlaid as the frontispiece to a copy of the 1866 Staunton facsimile of the Shakespeare First Folio. The volume was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the library of J.B. Learmont, held at the Anderson Galleries, N.Y., March 5, 1917. The book is listed as item no. 546 in the catalog of the sale.
Subject: The watercolor depicts Doll Tearsheet seated on the lap of Falstaff. Falstaff is holding a cup of wine in his right hand and two men are pictured looking through a doorway behind Falstaff and Doll. The drawing illustrates Act II, sc. 4 of King Henry IV, pt. 2.
