Provenance: The drawings are found at the beginning of the first volume of an extra-illustrated copy of Nathan Drake's Shakespeare and his times. The two volume edition of Drake's work has been expanded to five volumes through extra-illustration. The volumes were originally housed in the collection of Augustin Daly and are listed in the catalog of the sale of that library by the American Art Gallery in 1900 as item no. 3036. The book apparently passed into the hands of Livingston Ludlow Biddle, whose bookplate it bears, and was purchased by the Folgers from Stan V. Henkels, a Philadelphia bookseller, October 11, 1929. Work is listed as item no. 227 in Henkel's catalogue no. 1436.

Title page reads: "Drake's Shakspear and his times" with the "S" taking up the whole height of the page. The entire page is colored and the "T" in times is also illuminated. The crest is on the page after the title and is partially covered with gold leaf, the gold leaf having tracery, "William Shakespeare" is written neatly in ink below. Neither item is signed.
