History: Unable to find an engraving of the drawing in the Folger collection.
Provenance: Item is inlaid before p. 547 of printed text in volume 17 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance see entry for "Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer."
Small square drawing, well executed with fairly dark coloring, mauve and purple. Unsigned.
Subject: Drawing depicts Ophelia, appearing mad to the Queen. Ophelia is kneeling at center and the Queen is standing above her at left. Two other characters are visible in the drawing. Ophelia is shown here with dark hair. Action is from act 4, sc. 5 for Hamlet.
