Artist: Drawings are similar in style and medium to the Buss and Arundale sketches inlaid to the same set of volumes. This may be indicative of the publisher's directions rather than evidence of the same hand. The drawings are copied after old prints and the original designs are after varying artists. It is possible that the drawings are by different artists as well.
Provenance: Items have been inlaid to volumes 1, 5, and 6 in an extra illustrated copy of Knight's Pictorial edition of Shakespeare, London : Knight & Co., [n.d.]. For further information on volume and provenance see entry for "Anonymous. True loveknot".
Sketches are labeled as to subject either on verso or underneath, in pencil. All items are inlaid across from matching engraving and none are signed.
Subject: The subject matter of each drawing is listed in the printed edition of Knight's work, in the "List of illustrations." Designs for the following illustrations are included in this group: For Two gentlemen of Verona; 1) "Open place in Verona, including the Piazza Della Bra (from an old print)" 2) "Verona - view on the Adige (from an old print)" drawn by G.F. Sargent and engraved by J. Jackson 3) "Pillary (from Fox's Acts, &c)" 4) "Triumph at Mila. Composition after Hoghenberg," For The Tempest 1) "Manacles. From specimens in the Tower of London" 2) "A 'forth-right' maze. Projected from a ground-plan in 'The country housewife's garden' 1617." And for Romeo and Juliet ; "Old stage and balcony, from the title-page to Dr. W. Alabaster's Tragedy of Roxana, 1632." Drawings are engraved, for the most part, as informational illustrations, explaining passages in the works rather than illustrating specific scenes.
