Note
Full figure portrait to left, standing, looking front, playing pipe and tabor. Title written on the left and right sides of Tarlton's head. Ms. notes on bottom of drawing and on verso. Unsigned.
History: The note underneath the sketch reads "From a drawing in the British Museum- Temp. Q. Elizabeth. Drawn between 1589, the death of Tharleton, and 1603, the death of Elizabeth." The original drawing has been copied and engraved several times, once for Harding's Biographical mirrour, 1792. FSL has copies of the engraving and a watercolor copy of this same portrait in an extra illustrated copy of Shakespeare's Works (see card for "Harding, Silvester. Richard Tarlton"). This sketch varies from the engravings and the watercolor in that Tharlton is pictured here with a stubbled chin, as though he had not shaved recently, and his expression is rather gruff. The engraving pictures him clean shaven and rather mild mannered.
Provenance: Item is part of a collection of engravings, original drawings, newspaper clippings and ms. notes concerning the early London theaters. The collection was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., April, 1925. There is no indication in the case information as to who may have formed the collection. (ART Inventory 271 (cs1426)).
Subject: The item includes ms. notes which give some biographical information on Tarlton and give their sources. A poem has also been written about Tarlton on the verso of the sketch. Tarlton was a comic actor during Shakespeare's day and is listed as one of the twelve players who formed the company of the Queen's Players in 1583.
