Note
Artist: Woodward was known as a caricaturist who worked in the style of Bunbury and was influenced by Rowlandson. His caricatures were etched chiefly by Cruikshank and Rowlandson. According to H.L. Mallalieu his work relied on 'heavy black outlinings but is full of life and imagination'. His subject matter consisted mostly of social satire. The Shakespearean subjects pictured in this volume resemble in style his published caricatures.
First part of title taken from title page. Each page consists of a 1/2 length portrait of a Shakespearean character, executed within a circular border. Around the lower edge of the circle the portraits are signed and dated and beneath the circle they are labeled with the character's name and a quotation from the play in which they appear. Several of the pages bear the watermark 'E & P/1802'. Page size measures 11 1/4 x 9 in and the circle's average diameter is 7 3/4 in. Most of the items are dated the summer of 1805 though one is dated Dec., 1805 and 2 Jan., 1806.
History: According to the bookseller, these drawings were never published and cataloger found no evidence to the contrary.
Provenance: Volume was purchased from Maggs Bros., by the Folgers, in 1924. Items are cataloged separately in main art file.
