Note
Artist: Henry Tresham was an historical painter and a poet. He exhibited R.A. 1789-1806. Subjects were taken from Biblical, Roman and British history. DNB describes him as 'an accomplished draughtsman of a frigid academical type, but [with] little sense of colour'.
History: Drawing was engraved by C. Warren and used to illustrate the 1806 edition of the plays of Shakespeare, edited by Manley Wood and published by George Kearsley. Although the edition is dated 1806, the plate for which this drawing was designed is dated 1804. The volume which houses the original drawing also contains two copies of the engraving on the following pages, neither of which include the imprint. Tresham was responsible for the designs of two other engravings in the Manley Wood edition. FSL copy of the published work is PR 2752 1806a Sh.Col. A separate copy of the engraving can be found in ART File S528jl no.3.
Provenance: Volume is housed in volume 16 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for 'Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer'.
