Artist: The writing which labels the work is smeared and the artist's name is not written clearly. Artist identification is supplemented by the engraving for which the drawing was done.
History: Sketch was done for an engraving which was published by William Richards, November 1, 1794.
Provenance: Item is tipped into an extra-illustrated copy of Boaden's Inquiry into the authenticity of ... portraits of Shakespeare ... 1824. The book was sold to the Folgers as Boaden's own autographed and annotated copy by Richmond in May of 1905. It was formerly housed in the collection of W.H. Wyman.
