Artist: Artist identification is taken from the label on an engraving after the design of this watercolor. Three copies of the engraving are contained in the volume which houses the original drawing. Uwins was a painter and illustrator who studied at the R.A. schools, exhibited there from 1803-1857 and was elected a full member in 1838. He was responsible for numerous designs for book illustrations.
History: Design was engraved by C. Warren for publication in the 1806 edition of the plays of Shakespeare, edited by Manley Wood and published by George Kearsley. Although the edition is dated 1806, the plate for which this watercolor was designed is dated 1805. Uwins was responsible for two other designs in the Manley Wood edition, for Romeo and Juliet. FSL copy of the published work is PR2752 1806a Sh.Col. Individual copy of the engraving can be found in the FSL Art File.
Provenance: Item has been inlaid in volume 17 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for 'Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer'.
