Artist: Artist identification is taken from label and from the engraving after this design. Wageman was a 19th century portrait painter who did many theatrical portraits.
History: Portrait was engraved by T. Woolnoth, 1826 for publication by John Cumberland of London for his work Cumberland's British Theatre. Engraving is listed under West's entry in Harv. cat. Folger separate copy of the engraving is ART File W521 no.4.
Provenance: Item is contained in an extra-illustrated edition of The life of Edmund Kean which has been expanded from 2 to 8 volumes. The edition was purchased by the Folgers through 'Pike' but no date is given for the sale and cataloger unable to trace provenance further.

Subject: Sarah Cooke West is pictured here in the role of Portia in The merchant of Venice. She is noted as playing Desdemona to Kean's Othello in 1812 and was particularly known for her portrayal of that role and of Hermione in Winter's tale.

Mrs. West is pictured standing, full figure, facing left, looking right, her right hand pointing towards a casket behind her. Unsigned.
