Note
Artist: Thurston began his career as a copperplate engraver but switched to the designing of book illustrations at which he proved highly successful. As the DNB notes, 'most of the editions of the poets and novelists published during the first 20 years of [the 19th century], especially those issued by the Chiswick Press, were embellished by his pencil'.
Drawings are small and rectangular, outlined in pencil or ink and tinted with india ink wash. One vignette, for Richard II is a watercolor. Most have a penciled number in one of the four corners and none are signed.
History: Drawings were executed as designs for engravings to illustrate an edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works, printed in London for Thomas Tegg, 1812-1816. In the volume in which the drawings are housed, each original design is followed or preceded by the resulting engraving. Credit for the sculpting of the engravings is always given to Richard Rhodes. Of the 50 engravings in the finished edition, 12 are vignette designs for title pages. This extra illustrated edition of Shakespeare contains 28 of Thurstons original designs, 4 of which are vignette designs for title pages. FSL copy of published edition is PR 2752 1812-1815a1 Sh.Col.
Provenance: Items are housed in a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For more complete provenance information see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.
Published Work: Shakespeare, William. The dramatic works of William Shakespeare. London : Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1812-1815.
Subject: For list of plays illustrated, act and scene, see project notes under Thurston. FSL also has copies of some of the engravings, separate from the published edition, cataloged under Thurston and filed in ART File under Shakespeare, play, act and scene.
