Artist: Attribution doubtful, taken from an inked inscription beneath drawing (on paper to which drawing has been glued) which reads 'William Joyce Esq. from yours faithfully D.G Rosetti 9 [or 4] Dec 1865.' Pencil note on facing page attributes drawing to Rosetti. Item has no stlyistic affinity to Rosetti. It is a simple ink drawing, possibly by an amateur.

Drawn as a vignette on paper and glued to the verso of an engraved portrait of Shakespeare, bound as a frontispiece to a volume of the Poems of Shakespeare. Unsigned.

Subject: According to the pencil note on facing page, the drawing 'represents Vicennes the death of the Duke d'Enghien in which Rosetti's friend Joyce was much interested.' Drawing shows the firing line executing d'Enghien in the courtyard of the prison at Vincennes. The Duke was executed, March 20, 1804, for conspiracy against the life of Napoleon.
