Note
Artist: The W. Herbert noted on the verso may be the same as William Herbert (1771-1851), antiquary, who was associated with Robert Wilkinson in producing Londina illustrata. Many of the items in the collection from which this drawing was removed bear some connection to Londina illustrata.
History: No engraving, similar to this scene, has been located.
Provenance: Item is part of a collection of engravings, original drawings, newspaper clippings and ms. notes concerning the early London theaters. The collection was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. April, 1925. There is no indication in the case information as to who may have formed the collection.
Subject: The view of Bankside, Southwarke, given here is absent of theaters. It depicts a few rows of houses and three fields. Two figures and a dog are pictured in the right foreground. Identification of the subject is taken from the note on the verso.
