Note
Artist: Jones was primarily a scenic designer and director who was associated with the plays of Eugene O'Neill and is noted as having revolutionized American scene design. This costume design is registered as no.64-B8 in the Index of theater designs of Robert Edmond Jones, maintained by the Olin Memorial Library of Wesleyan University.
Executed on artists' board, four swatches of fabric attached at left. In ink on recto: 'OTHELLO/Mr. Robeson/(Tavern)/Both garments unlined/see pattern/cloth slippers to match' ; in pencil top center: 'Sk 10" (?). On verso in pencil: 'Belden-- +3--' Glued to verso is a paper label registering the item in index of Jones's theater designs. Incapsulated and connected to the item is a letter concerning design's provenance.
History: Design was executed for the 1943 production of Othello staged in New York at the Schubert Theater. The production ran from Oct. 1943 to July 1944, 295 nights, and was at that time the longest running Shakespeare play on record.
Provenance: Drawing was given to the library 'the gift of James O. Belden in memory of Evelyn Berry Belden', the donor requesting this notation to be included in all official and published references to the item. (ac213267).
