Portrays a man slumped over a writing table and 2 men in the background standing at the door. Title is written underneath.
Artist: Noted by Houfe as an amateur illustrator, Hamley was a military officer who taught military history at Sandhurst. He contributed articles to Blackwood's and Fraser's magazines and illustrated 'The campaign of Sebastool' in 1855.
Subject: Sketch is meant to illustrate a section (p.19) of the fictional work 'Shakespeare's funeral'. The master Sherlock portrayed is a caricature of Shakespeare's Shylock.
Provenance: Sketch is enclosed in a copy of Hamley's Shakespeare's funeral which was originally published in Blackwood's magazine. Magazine has not been examined to see if design was used in publication. The book is the author's presentation copy to Frederick Locker-Lampson and was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. in 1922.
