Almost half length portrait, to left, coat buttoned up to neck. Title from penciled note underneath. Unsigned.
Artist: Drawing is similar to a print by Silvester Harding (see below) and a penciled note on the flyleaf of the volume which houses the drawing credits Harding as artist of some of the works inside.
History: Drawing is similar to a stipple engraving of Burbage published in Harding's Shakespeare illustrated. Harv. cat. of dram. ports. lists the engraving as the no.1 entry under Burbage and notes that it is from a picture at Dulwich. Both the Harvard engraving and the Folger engraving (FSL ART File B946 no.1) are dated 1790. The first edition of Shakespeare illustrated listed in NUC and BMC is the 1793 ed. Possibly the plates were issued separately. The plates in the 1793 ed. date between 1790 and 1793. FSL has another watercolor of the same portrait, attributed to Harding. The two vary slightly (ART Vol. d7 no.12).
Subject: Burbage is known as one of the first Shakespearean actors.
Provenance: For information on volume and prov. see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.
Published work: Harding, Silvester. Shakespeare illustrated ... London: S&E Harding, 1793.
