Three quarter length portrait, to left standing, pointing to head or mouth. Costume is light green with pink and black points. He wears a hat with two feathers coming out of the center. Drawing is not labeled. Unsigned. Title from Harv. cat.
Artist: Drawing is similar to watercolor portraits, contained in the same set of volumes, which have been attributed to Silvester Harding (see records under Harding for Richard Tarlton and William Kempe). An identical watercolor, using the same colors, housed in the Folger collection, has been attributed to George Perfect Harding (Silvester's son) by the bookseller. Item is catalogued in the Art File under G.P. Harding as 'supposed artist' ART Box H263 no.25. Item measures the same as watercolor noted here. A penciled note on the flyleaf of the first volume of this extra illustrated set credits Harding as artist of some of the drawings inside. It does not note which Harding.
History: Portrait is taken from a woodcut illustration used as the title page to the 1614 (1st) edition of John Cooke's Greene's tu quoque, or The cittie gallant (STC 5673). The original portrait includes a label, coming out of Greene's mouth with the words 'Tu quoque, To you Sir.' It is this label to which the hand is pointing. The portrait is listed as no.1 under the entry for Greene in Harv. cat. of dram. ports. and a copy of the title page, printed by M. Flesher, supposedly for the 3rd edition of the play (according to Harv.) has been added to the 1st volume of the same set of Shakespeare which houses this watercolor (before p.xli).
Subject: Harvard cat. lists Greene as a comedian and dates him as having died before 1612 or 1614. Cataloguer unable to find note of him in reference sources, although the DNB notes him under the entry for the playwrite John Cooke as a famous comedian. Harv. cat. describes the portrait as Greene as Bubble the city gallant in J. Cooke's 'Greene's Tu quoque'.
Provenance: Item has been inlaid before p.487 in vol.9 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.
