Title from inked label in margin. Also in the bottom right margin are the initials V.D. & M.A.H.
Artist: Entry has been made under Hedger rather than V.D because the full name was available. Cataloger unable to find the identity of V.D. M.A.H. is assumed to be Mary Ann Hedger due to the fact that there are several other ink sketches in the same collection which are signed by or attributed to her. Cataloger was unable to find Hedger listed in art reference sources. The only V.D. cataloger found is a V. Davis listed in Mall. as working in London about 1800.
History: Item is part of a collection which contains an engraving of the same view. The two items are pasted to same page. The engraving lacks imprint and artist/engraver. The depiction of the Globe is taken from a close up section of Visscher's view of London, dated 1616.
Subject: The flag that is normally shown waving on the flagpole in Visscher's view has not been completely drawn in on the watercolor. Figures are shown outside the theater, peeping in the windows.
Provenance: Item is part of a collection of engravings, original drawings, newspaper clippings and ms. notes concerning the early London theaters. The collection was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. April, 1925. There is no indication in the case information as to who may have formed the collection.
