Full figure portrait, standing to left with right arm extended. Cushman is dressed as Cesario and the painting is labeled at bottom right. Unsigned.
Artist: Item is attributed to Moblard due to its similarity to other works in the FSL collection signed by him. See other entries under Moblard and guide card for Augustus Toedteberg. No biographical information has yet come to light on Moblard. His work indicates that he was a watercolor copyist of rare prints.
History: Portrait is taken after a print, a copy of which is found in ART Vol. b54, vol.14 p.122. The print portrays Olivia and Viola, with Susan Cushman as Viola, and notes that they were playing at the Haymarket. The print was engraved by H. Anelay and is listed in Harv. Cat., no 44 under Cushman's entry, as a newcutting from the London illustrated news, July 11, 1846. FSL also has a photograph of the watercolor, ART File C986 no.7.
Provenance: Item is contained in an extra-illustrated volume of the Daly edition of Twelfth night. For volume and provenance information see record under Moblard for M. Tree as Viola.
