Artist: Possibly related to Victor Moblard whose watercolors of actors playing Shylock are found in the same volume.
History: Sketch is after a painting by James McArdell (now housed in FSL), which was engraved in mezzotint and printed in London for Robert Sayer (see entry under Toedteberg, Augustus. 'James Quin as Falstaff' for large ink wash, possibly executed over the mezzotint, and possibly done by Moblard as well). Mezzotint is listed as item 11 under Quin's entry in Harv. Cat.
Subject: Quin was an 18th century actor who worked at both Drury Lane and Covent Garden and was noted for his portrayal of Falstaff.
Provenance: Item is contained in an extra-illustrated volume of the Daly edition of the Merchant of Venice, as arranged for presentation at Daly's Theatre and there produced for the 1st time on Sat. Nov. 19, 1898. The edition was privately printed in 1898. The volume was purchased by the Folgers from the auction of the Augustin Daly collection held by the American Art Galleries in 1900. According to the sales catalog, item no.737, the book was inlaid to folio by Augustus Toedteberg and is a unique copy, bound by Stikeman.
