Drawings are small and oval with some surface abrasion. Unlabeled and unsigned.
Artist: Artist identification is taken from engravings which match the designs of these drawings. There are 4 to 5 Metz listed in art reference sources though the most likely candidate is Conrad Martin Metz, 1749 or 55-1827. C.M. Metz was a painter and engraver of German origin who studied at the R.A. schools under Bartolozzi and exhibited historical and poetical subjects there from 1781-1794.
History: Drawings appear to have been executed as designs for engravings to illustrate an edition of The plays of Shakespeare, printed in London for Bellamy and Robarts, 1787-1791. In the case of two of these drawings, copies of the resulting engravings have been inlaid to the same extra-illustrated volumes that contain the original sketches. These extra-illustrated volumes also contain original drawings by other artists executed for the same edition of Shakespeare. The engraver of all three Metz designs is noted as Talylor. FSL copy of the Bellamy & Robarts edition is PR 2752 1791 a1 Sh.Col. FSL also has individual copies of the engravings in the Art File, cataloged under Metz and filed under Shakespeare, play, act, scene.
Subject: The 3 drawings illustrate the following scenes: Julius Caesar, Act I, Sc. 6 and Act IV, Sc. 3 ; Othello, Act V, Sc. 2. (These 3 drawings were the only designs done by Metz for the publication, see Hammelman. Book illustrators in 18th century England).
Provenance: Items are housed in volumes 16 and 19 in a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce an formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for 'Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.'
