Title taken from engraving preceding drawing. Unsigned.
Artist: Artist identification is taken from an engraving of the drawing, found in the same extra-illustrated volume. The engraving credits Medland as sculptor, from a print by Sylvester. Medland is noted as an engraver and draughtsman who excelled in landscape work and also practised the art of water color painting. He exhibited at at the R.A. 1777-1822. He is noted here as possible artist since he was known to have done watercolors and may well have done this one as a preliminary sketch for his engraving.
History: Drawing was engraved as a plate to Harding's Shakespeare illustrated, 1793. The engraving was used again in 1811 as a plate to Jeffrey's Historical dramas of Shakespeare illustrated.
Subject: Engraving is used to show the setting of King John, Act II, Sc. 1, 'France. Before Angiers.' Wash drawing depicts the river side view of the town, with the castle and church steeple in full view.
Provenance: Item is tipped in after p.190 of the printed text of volume 8 of a 21 volume extra-illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For more provenance information see record for 'Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.'
