A tissue paper has been tipped in between each drawing and the printed text. In ink, on the tissue paper, the artist and subject of the work have been noted. Two of the four drawings are initialed in the lower right corner. One of the drawings is unfinished.
Artist: Lami was a lithographer and painter of genre subjects, battle scenes and court festivities. He was a founder of the Societe des Aquarellistes. He is noted mostly as an illustrator, particularly for his illustrations of English life and scenery in Voyage en Angleterre (1829-30).
History: Since Lami was noted as an illustrator it is possible that these drawings were intended to illustrate an edition of Shakespeare. Cataloger unable, however, to find a listing for an edition illustrated by Lami in NUC, BMC or BN.
Subject: The drawings depict scenes from the following plays: 1) Romeo and Juliet, the balcony scene (before p.143 - unfinished) ; 2) Macbeth, heath scene with Macbeth, Banquo and the weird sisters (before p.307) ; 3) As you like it, group scene in the forest (before p.411) ; 4) Merchant of Venice, street scene (before p.587).
Provenance: Drawings have been inlaid and tipped into a French translation of selected Shakespeare plays, translated by M. Francisque Michel and published in Paris by Didot Freres, n.d. The volume was purchased by the Folgers from Rosenbach in 1924. According to Mrs. Folger's file the book formerly belonged to the library of Arthur Meyer, editor of the 'Gaulois'.
