56 of the items are costume designs drawn in watercolor on grey construction board. Many of them are heightened in silver or gold, all are signed and labeled, and many have notes on the back concerning color and fabric material and giving the actor's name. They measure 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. The other 3 items (ART Box F288 no.57-59) are designs for tapestries depicting a ship, a man fighting a serpent, and 2 jousters. These items are also signed and have pencil notations on them. Two are thin strips measuring approx. 15 x 4 3/4 in., the third is a full page drawing, measuring 13 x 18 in and dated 1928.
History: Costumes were designed for Gaston Baty's production of Hamlet, staged from what Baty called the 1603 version of Hamlet. The production opened at the Theatre de l'Avenue, Oct. 8 1928. Hamlet was portrayed by Marguerite Jamois, Ophelia by Marie-Louie Delby, the Queen by Isabella Anderson, the King by Georges Vitry, Laertes by Lucas Gridoux and Polonius by Henri Beaulieu. Included with the costume designs is a folder containing ms. notes concerning the lighting and a typed description of the production in French (ART Box F288 Suppl.). A stage design by Baty is cataloged separately as ART Box B336 no.1. FSL also has a ms. copy of the music written for this production by Andre Cadou (FSL W.b. 553), as well as a ms. of Baty's 'Visage de Shakespeare', his essay written to accompany the presentation of his Hamlet (FSL ms. S.a. 110).
Provenance: Items were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., Feb. 7 1929. Formerly housed in a brown box labeled 'Hamlet. Original Manuscript and 59 Original Drawings' and numbered ART Inv. 294 cs1888.
