Volume consists of 29 watercolors plus a handpainted title page. Each watercolor depicts a flower or a group of flowers and has a quotation from Shakespeare penned beneath it. Items were executed on wove paper, much of which is now badly foxed. Items are not signed.
Artist: Jane Elizabeth Giraud was a 19th century floral painter and lithographer. She was also responsible for a work entitled The flowers of Milton which follows the same format as The flowers of Shakespeare. The plates to the published edition of this work are signed on stone 'I.E.G. del et lith', excepting the title page which is signed 'E.I.G. det et lith'.
History: Volume is an autograph manuscript for a book published by Day & Haghe ca. 1845. NUC and Jaggard bibliographic records attribute the publishing to Ackermann of London and date it variously 1846 and 1850. The Folger copy of the printed edition has on the title page 'Day & Haghe, Lith.rs to the Queen, [n.d.]'. A dedication on the second page, to Herbert Giraud, M.D. from his sister, is dated 'Faversham, Feb. 18th 1845.' The type on the printed edition varies from the ms. lettering. Folger copy of the printed edition is ART Vol. f67. Illustrations were reproduced in a 1980 monograph by Doris Hunt without credit to Giraud (who was noted by Hunt as an anonymous artist).
Provenance: Volume was purchased by the Folgers in June/July of 1928. A typed description of the volume from an unidentified bookseller is filed in Case file. The front endpaper bears the stamp Shakespeare Press, Stratford-upon-Avon.
Published work: Girard, Jane Elizabeth. The flowers of Shakespeare. 1846.
