Seven watercolor portraits of Ada Rehan in the characters of Pierrot, Rosalind in As you like it, Lititia Hardy in The belle's stratagem, Jenny O'Jones in Red letter nights, Katharina in Taming of the shrew and two other unidentifiable characters. The other twenty-one items are border designs painted directly on the printed pages of the volume, one being a bust portrait of Rehan, the rest are flowers, garlands, and other decorative items. The seven portraits are on separate sheets and are set into the front of the volume. Three of the portraits are signed.
Artist: Grivaz was a French artist who did extra illustrated work on one of Daly's noted copies of Woffington, as well as some set and costume designs for Daly productions. He appears to have been in New York in 1891 and working for Daly at that time according to some ms. letters from Grivaz to Daly in the Folger collection. In another letter, from Paris Grivaz mentions work he has done illustrating editions of French plays.
Provenance: Items are found in an edition of William Winter's Ada Rehan : a study, privately printed for Augustin Daly, New York, 1891. Of the 113 copies printed this copy is no.113 and the third of 3 printed on Japan paper. The copy is signed by Augustin Daly and is found in the catalog of the sale of Augustin Daly's library held by the American Art Galleries in 1900, cat. item no.2768. The book was purchased by the Folgers from Livingston (?) in 1928.
Published work: Winter, William. Ada Rehan. Ex.ill.
