Note
A tissue paper has been tipped in between the item and the printed text. In ink, on the tissue paper, the artist and title have been noted. Item is unsigned but bears the estate stamp of Delacroix in red ink in the lower left corner.
History: Drawing is either a design for or a drawing after a lithograph entitled 'Macbeth consulting the witches' which was printed in 1815. The lithograph was executed by G. Englemann from Delacroix's design and bears the quotation 'Toil and trouble, Fire burn and couldron bubble'. For copy of the lithograph see ART File S528m1 no.127.

Subject: Macbeth is pictured standing at left, his arms crossed in front, facing right. The witches are seen far right, pointing at Macbeth, and the cauldron is set between Macbeth and the witches. Illustration to Macbeth, Act IV, sc. 1.
