Note
History: The subject of these drawings is not listed in Reid's Catalogue of Cruikshank's Works, or is it found in the published work of Brough's Life of Sir John Falstaff although it appears to be a design appropriate to Cruikshank's other illustrations for that work.
Provenance: Two of the items are contained in a folio volume which contains finished etchings and rough sketches for the illustrations to Brough's Life of Falstaff. Volume is from the H.W. Bruton collection and has his signature on the endpaper. It was purchased from Maggs Bros. in 1924. The sketches have been inlaid to pages 4v (2 sketches) and 32 (ART Vol. D40, cs1283). One of the items has been removed from a copy of the published work (PR 2993 F2 B8 Ex.ill. copy 1) which was purchased from A.S.W. Rosenbach in 1921 (ART Box C955 no.7a). Two of the sketches were purchased from the Leverhulme sale, no.103,119 in the catalog, March 2, 1926 (ART Box C955 no.8,11) and another was bought, according to Mrs. Folger's card, of Robson & Co. Cat. 76, no.165 (ART Box C955 no.7).
Subject: Four of the sketches depict the full scene of Falstaff seated, holding a glass of wine and Francis, standing next to him holding a tray. Sketches vary in the number of other characters that are included. Two of the items are sketches of Falstaff only, seated and holding a glass of wine. The subject of the drawings is taken from Henry IV, pt. 1, Act II, Scene 4 in which Falstaff and his friends have just returned from Gadshill and the servant Francis is called to bring wine to Sir John. There are sketches in the margins, on two of the items, of Bardolph's head and supposedly of the artist's head. Two of the sketches have been executed on the versos of sketches which are noted separately in this catalog. The subject of this sketch may have been supplanted in the published illustrations by the etching of Falstaff giving his account of Gadshill and Falstaff enacting the part of the King.
