Artist: Darley was apparently 17 years of age when this sketchbook was executed. According to Croce and Wallace (DAA) Darley began his 'notable career as an illustrator in 1842, three years after this sketchbook was completed.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers through George Smith in 1818.

Volume contains six leaves, There are 2 crayon sketches and the rest are in pen and ink. Two of the leaves are covered with studies of men's heads. The first leaf is cut and contains a study of a gravedigger, the second leaf has two more studies of the gravedigger and a study of the head of Shakespeare (possibly). Another leaf is covered with handwriting practice. The cover reads F.O.C. Darley Philada 1839. The last leaf reads the same but adds the date Dec. 9th.
