Note
Artist: Dayes is best known for his topographical watercolors, though he is noted as having done some work in book illustration. Mallalieu describes him as being 'particularly fond of producing what are in effect blue monochromes, in which he uses Prussian blue and brown Indian ink over light pencil.' This drawing seems to match Mallalieu's description though it does not seem to be as well executed as most of Dayes work is noted to be. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1786-1804, mostly topographical subjects though in 1798 he began to submit classical and scriptural subjects.
Drawing is small and oval. Unlabeled and unsigned.
History: Drawing appears to have been executed as a design for an engraving to illustrate an edition of the plays of Shakespeare, printed in London for Bellamy and Robarts, 1787-1791. The extra illustrated volume in which this wash is contained is part of a set which includes original drawings by other artists, executed for the same edition of Shakespeare. Dayes was responsible for 17 of the illustration designs in the edition. FSL copy of the Bellamy & Robarts edition is PR 2752 1791a1 Sh.Col. FSL also has an individual copy of the resulting engraving (ART File S528k3c no.13).
Provenance: Item is housed in vol. 12 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for Harding, Sivester, Dr. Farmer.
