Note
Artist: Drawings are characterized by a sort of ink spotting over the surface of the picture. The figures are almost caricatures and are usually humorous or grotesque.
Artist: Unable to locate in any reference source. The Folger has 17 more items by the same artist, many of which are signed. All of these are also Shakespearean scenes but are a bit larger. (ART Box C678 no. 1-17) The boxed items were purchased by the Folgers from the Rosenbach Co. in 1925. Other works by Coghlan are noted by Robert Wark as being contained in the Huntington Library's Turner Shakespeare - see PR2883 W3[?].
aThis record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance.
History: Drawings were probably not used for an edition, unable to locate any printed reproductions in FSL collection.
Items are inlaid but unlabeled. Three of the drawings are signed and one is dated 1816. All the works are done in a very similar style, obviously by the same artist.
Provenance: Items are inlaid to volumes 2,3,4,6,9,17, and 18 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer.
Subject: The volumes contain one illustration for each of the following plays: The tempest, Two gentlemen of Verona, Measure for measure, Love's labour's lost, Midsummer night's dream, Taming of the shrew, All's well, Henry IV pt. 1, Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear.
