Note
Artist: Both Jellicoe and Railton were 'black and white' illustrators who worked mostly for magazines. No information has been found as to the nature of their collaboration.
History: Drawings were executed for publication in consecutive issues of the Illustrated sporting and dramatic news, Jan. 5-Feb. 16, 1889. On the magazine reproductions, the name J. Swain is signed in the corner as the engraver. Ink stamps on versos of other works by Jellicoe in the FSL title Swain as 'zincographer'. The illustrations in the magazines appear to have been photographically reproduced. The Folger does not have copies of the magazines, however a separate copy of the reproduction of no.15 is housed in ART File S528ml no.99).
Provenance: Items were purchased by the Folgers from Henry Sotheran in 1903.

Subject: Works were done to illustrate Henry Irving's production of Macbeth in which Irving played the title role and Ellen Terry played Lady Macbeth. The production opened at the Lyceum Dec. 29, 1888 and ran through June of 1889. The costumes were designed by Charles Cattermole with the exception of Lady Macbeth's famous gown which was designed by Alice Comyns Carr. The scenery was by Hawes Craven. ART Box J48 no.19.5 was designed for a two page spread and illustrates 5 scenes from the production, executed on 4 boards which have been pieced together. The other 5 items were done for publication during consecutive weeks and are of the following scenes: Act I, Sc. 2, camp near Forres, for 12, Jan. 89 (ART Box J48 no.14) ; Act I, Sc. 6, Lady Macbeth meeting Duncan, for 19, Jan. 89 (no.15) ; Act II, the court of Macbeth's castle at the discovery of Duncan's murder, for 26, Jan. 89 (no.16) ; Act III, for banqueting scene, for 2 Feb. 89 (no.18) ; and The last scene, for 15 Jan. 89 (no.19).
