Artist: Rackham's illustrations to Midsummer night's dream were among his most successful designs. As well as being published in an edition of the play, the illustrations were exhibited in 1908 at the Leicester Galleries in London. Rackham was later commissioned by the NYPL to provide another series of illustrations for Midsummer night's dream for their W.A. Spencer Collection which were exhibited in 1927 at the NYPL. They were also reproduced in facsimile in another edition of the play in 1977 (see PR 2827 1977 Sh.Col.).
History: Drawing was executed as an illustration for the 1908 edition of Midsummer night's dream, published by William Heinemann in London and Doubleday, Page & Co., in New York. Edition was limited to 1,000 copies for sale in Great Britain, signed by the artist. There was also a trade edition, bound in cloth rather than the vellum of the deluxe edition, and an American edition. In the British edition the drawing appears as a three-color photoreproduction, tipped to a leaf of brown paper facing page 102 of the text. Reproduction measures 6 x 5 in. (FSL copy of published work is PR 2827 1908 Sh.Col.).
Provenance: Purchased by the Folgers from the N.Y. bookseller Alwin J. Scheuer, Sept. 25, 1928. Correspondence has not been located but as with the other Rackhams purchased from Scheuer, this drawing presumably came directly from the artist.
