Note
Date range based on style of drawings and on artist's dates of activity.
3 sets of 8 drawings each of houses, public buildings, etc., connected with the life of Shakespeare. Title taken from labels on portfolios from which items have been removed. Most of the drawings are initialed, one set of eight is signed, and all Folger copies are labeled in pencil on front and back of the backing to which they have been glued.
Artist: Braddon is listed in Wood's Dict. of Victorian painters as a topographical painter who used the name Paul Braddon as a pseudonym for W.H. Crees. According to Wood, he published Nooks, crannies and corners of Birmingham in 1893. Mallalieu, in his Brit. watercolor artists, lists Braddon as a pseudonym for James Leslie Crees and puts him in the neighborhood of Hull doing large watercolors of old prints.
Provenance: The three sets of drawings were purchased by the Folgers from 3 different dealers and it has not been definitely determined which set came from where. One set (possibly the 2nd) was bought from an Anderson sale on May 24, 1909, cat. no. 496. Another set came from the library of William Harvey and bought through a Merwin Clayton auction. A third set was purchased from William Brough and Sons, Birmingham and is listed in their 1898 catalog, no. 632, item no. 336. In the catalog entry the artist is described as "celebrated." Item no. 334 on the same catalog, also by Braddon, consists of watercolor drawings illustrative of the lives of Goldsmith, Johnson, Lamb, Gray, Thackery, Eliot, and Dickens. Items were formerly contained in 3 separate portfolios, each labeled "Haunts of Shakespeare, Paul Braddon" and numbered ART Inv. nos. 313, 314 and 315.
