Artist: According to Mrs. Folger's file and case list information the drawing was sold to the Folgers as being the work of George Cattermole. Due to a lack of identifiable style or signature, and to the confusion with provenance (see below), work has been cataloged as anonymous.
Provenance: There seems to have been some confusion in the case list concerning this item. Apparently it was listed in case 1404 but found in case 1378. The number 1378 is found on the verso of the drawing. Case 1404 lists an "Original charcoal drawing: Macbeth." Mrs. Folger's card file lists the work as that of George Cattermole, give its measurements (12 x 18) and describes it as a scene from Macbeth III, sc. I, Macbeth and the murderers. According to the card in Mrs. Folger's records the drawing was purchased from Maggs Bros. March 23, 1925.

Title taken from pencil note on the mat of the Folger copy. Drawing is terribly smudged and abrased with very little of the subject being discernible. The central figure of Macbeth (presumably) can almost be seen but other than that the picture is, for the most part, a blur. Unsigned.
