Artist: Drawing had been attributed to Thomas Gainsborough, however there is no evidence to corroborate that attribution. John T. Hayes, author of The drawings of Thomas Gainsborough (1971), refuted the attribution.
On laid paper, chain lines running horizontally, watermark partially clipped: I. Villedary, n.d. Glued at top to another sheet of laid paper with a "J. Whatman & Co." watermark, n.d. On recto of drawing in ink, lower left: 1752 ; lower right: Thos. Gainsborough f. On mount paper, recto, in pencil lower left: 1439 ; penned note at bottom reads: Othello. Erased in ink at bottom right are the remains of two indecipherable initials and a date, possibly 1752. On verso of mount in pencil: 1720 from E. Parsons & Sons Sept 1927.
Provenance: Purchased by the Folgers from E. Parsons and Sons, Sept., 1927.
Subject: Half length portrait of a young black man, to right, his left arm bent at elbow and raised toward his head, his right hand on his breast. The figure is pictured in broad brimmed hat with a large feather, an embroidered coat, and a ruffled shirt. The penned note on the support identifying the subject as "Othello" is not evidenced in the drawing.
