Preliminary sketch for an engraving for Brough's Life of Falstaff (published 1857-58). It is unclear whether this sketch was a preliminary for one of the seated figures in the illustration where Falstaff gives his account of the affairs at Gadshill (as suggested by the pencil note) or the scene in which Falstaff enacts the part of the King (as suggested by the card catalog title). Falstaff himself is not depicted in this sketch.
