Artist attribution taken from bookseller (see below). Items are labeled as to play, act and scene, on verso. The drawing for All's well has pencil sketches on verso as well. None of the items are signed.
Artist: The drawing for All's well and the first drawing for Taming of the shrew were sold to the Folgers as the work of J.W. Wright. The first Taming of the shrew ill. was mistakenly cataloged under J. Atkinson due to a case number confusion. The second Taming of the shrew was sold, by the same bookseller, as the work of John Massey Wright though it is almost identical, except in coloring, to the illustration sold as the work of John William. According to reference sources these two artists were frequently confused due to the closeness in their names and to the fact that they often drew for the same publications and were working in the same time period. Both were members of the Old Watercolour Society and both exhibited at the R.A. Drawings are similar to other works attributed to John Massey Wright in the FSL collection, though there are some slight variations in style and, particularly in the case of the second Taming of the shrew ill., coloring.
Provenance: The first two items were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. in June of 1923. The third item was purchased from Maggs in Dec. of 1924. Maggs Bros. furnished no provenance information.
Subject: The first item is labeled All's Well that ends well and pictures Helena, seated center, Parolles, standing right, and Bertram, standing left (character identification is assumed from play title). There are rough sketches, on the verso, of clasped hands and a man leading a horse (ART Box W951.5 no.10). The second item is labeled [incorrectly] on the verso Taming of the Shrew Act IV, Sc. viii [should be scene 1] and pictures Katherine on the floor with her right arm raised to protect herself from Petruchio who is standing over her in a frenzy, holding a stick. There are two men looking in through the doorway at right (ART Box W951.5 no.11). The third item portrays the same scene and is almost identical, however it is a bit more finished and makes use of darker colors, more pencil and stronger outlining. The interior architecture and facial depictions also very (ART Box W951.5 no.12). Items measure 6 5/8 x 5 in., 5 x 4 5/8 in., and 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. respectively.
