Artist: Artist attribution is concluded from the item's similarity to the body of Wright's watercolors in the Folger collection. Item has been erroneously attributed to J.M.W. Turner by the bookseller and is totally uncharacteristic of Turner's work.
Item has been removed from a backing which had a typed label reading: 'J.M.W. Turner. Macbeth and Macduff in the Cave'. Item is unsigned.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from John Anderson Jr. in Jan. of 1921 as the work of J.M.W. Turner. When the item was purchased it was in a frame.
Subject: Although the label which was formerly attached to this picture identified it as a scene from Macbeth, there are no elements in the picture to affirm this. Since the artist identified on the label is incorrect the subject matter label is probably doubtful as well. The picture shows a man seated with his right arm resting on a table edge and a sword hanging from his right hip. A soldier is standing left of the man, his back to the viewer and his hands held behind his back. The soldier's head is turned to the right, facing the seated man and he is wearing a helmet. There is a shield on the ground at left.
