Collection of one original drawing (Folger ART Box S659 no.1) and two printed posters (Folger ART Box S659 no.1a and 1b) made from the drawing. Printed posters were done by The Herrick Press, Fine Arts Bldg. Chicago, and are housed separately from drawing.
Poster reads at top: Shakespearean Festival Ben Greet Players of London and at bottom: Studebaker Theatre, Three weeks beginning April third, Repertoire: As You Like it, Twelfth Night, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Comedy of Errors, Merchant of Venice, Much Ado about nothing, Hamlet, Two parts. The center section of the poster portrays a scene from As you like it with Orlando, Rosalind (as Ganymede) and Celia. The design is not dated but it is signed. 21 1/2 x 12 1/2 in.
Provenance: The poster design was purchased by the Folgers from the Herrick Co. of Chicago in August of 1905. One of the Folger copies of the pinted poster was presented to the Folgers by Ben Greet in 1905. Card in Mrs. Folger's file calls the item a 'Prize Poster for the Ben Greet Co...' (according to Mrs. Folger's file, the Folgers received 2 copies of the printed poster.).
Subject: According to the Folger's acquisitions records the performance for which this poster advertises was given at Chicago in 1905. The company, formed by actor-manager Ben Greet, toured both the U.K. and the U.S. Greet is associated with the American stage from 1901-1914. He aided in the founding of the Old Vic in 1915-1918. His company was known as a training ground for promising young actors.
