Artist: Unable to find Thiriat listed in art reference sources. He is, however, given a cross reference in BMC as the illustrator of P. Acker's Le Soldat Bernard, 1909.
History: Drawing was published on the title page of the Sept. 12, 1903 (Vol. xiv, no. 190) issue of The sphere. FSL has a copy of the magazine in ART Flat a16 no.2.
Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers from Henry Sotheran in 1905.

Subject: Drawing illustrates a scene from Tree's production of Richard II, in which he played the leading role. It pictures Oscar Asche as Bolingbroke and William Haviland as the Duke of Norfolk as well. A program for this production which opened in September of 1903, can be found housed in the FSL Program Collection, under London. Her Majesty's Theatre (Envelope II). FSL also has other artist's renderings of the same production, including works by F. Townsend, C. Buchel,Percy Spence, B. Salmon and Ralph Cleaver.
Title taken from caption on published version of picture which continues 'Mr. Tree revived 'Richard II' on Thursday. This picture shows the King (Mr. Tree) seated listening to Bolingbroke (on right) impeaching Norfolk (on left). Drawn by Paul Thiriat.' Pencil note on verso reads 'Sphere Today 3% 6404'. Item is signed.
