History: Drawing appeared as a three-color reproduction tipped on the the leaf facing page 150 of the 1926 Heinemann/Doubleday edition of The tempest. The reproduction measured 6 1/8 x 5 in. The publication was issued in a limited and in a trade edition.
On woven watercolor paper, blind stamped upper right corner: 1904 RWS GUARANTEED PURE PAPER 5A PALL MALL. Face of paper has been removed from a mount board which bore the following pencil notations:'C6092 / A Rackham /6 Primrose Hill Studios / NW1 / --- 5 --- between pencil marks / 1702 /D189 / 185>' In ink: 'The Tempest / no. 19 Enter certain Reapers / by Arthur Rackham'. On recto are pencil cropping marks and at bottom on recto: 'I'll be all right on the night" and bottom right corner: 'cut' in pencil. Signed, lower right, in ink. Unevenly cut. Photocopies of removed mount board in curatorial file.
Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers from the N.Y. bookseller Alwin J. Scheuer, Sept. 25, 1928. Correspondence has not been located but as with the other Rackhams purchased from Scheuer, this drawing presumably came directly from the artist.

Subject: Drawing depicts nine elves dressing themselves and each other in human clothing. Four of them wear straw hats and two have wings on their backs. The lines in The tempest which this drawing depicts are stage directions. The reapers are called by Prospero who says: 'You sunburn'd sickleman, of August weary, Come hither ... Your rye-straw hats put on, And these fresh nymphs encounter every one In country footing.' The stage direction then reads: 'Enter certain Reapers, properly habited. They join the nymphs in a graceful dance;'.
