Artist: Item is attributed to Moblard due to its similarity to other works in the FSL collection signed by him. See other entries under Moblard and guide record for Augustus Toedteberg. No biographical information is available on Moblard. His work indicates that he was a watercolor copyist of rare prints.
History: Portrait is copied after an etching by John Kay dated 1784. The etching bears no imprint and is labeled with a quotation from King Henry IV, pt. 1. Kay's depiction includes Bardolph (possibly played by a Mr. Charteris) and may be illustrative of a provincial performance of the play (see Highfill, Bio dic. under entry for Henderson, no.25 in the list of portraits, etching reproduced on p.256). The print is listed as item no.19 under Henderson's entry in Harv. cat. FSL copy is ART File H496 no.12. (The portrayal of Bardolph in the print is quite similar to G.P. Harding's depiction of Mr. Bland, see entry under Harding).
No biographical information has been located on Moblard. The user is referred to entries under Toedteberg, Augustus for additional works from the Toedteberg shop.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from part 2 of the sale of the collection of Augustus Toedteberg, held by Anderson, Feb.25-26, 1904. Item is listed as no.1991 in the catalog of the sale. Formerly cataloged as an original work by Kay and numbered ART Box K23 no.2.
Subject: The label on the drawing continues with the quotation 'I never see thy nose, but I think upon hell fire.' The print is labeled with this quotation as well as Bardolph's preceeding line. The watercolor unlike the print, does not include Bardolph.
The art collection of the Folger Library includes many volumes of extra-illustrated books, several of which formerly belonged to the library of the theatrical manager Augustin Daly. Many of Daly's extra-illustrated volumes were inlaid and organized by Augustus Toedteberg, a professional inlayer and repairer of prints who resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. in the 1870's to 1890's.
The volumes which Toedteberg grangerized contain a number of watercolor portraits copied after rare prints, which are signed by a Victor Moblard who may have been under the employ of Toedteberg. Moblard's style of painting and writing is rather distinct and even where he has not signed his name it is easy to spot his work. In cases where his signature or initials appear, or where the style gives evidence of his work, the item hs been entered under his name. In all cases, where known, a subject entry has been given for the original artist of the print from which Moblard was copying.
