Title from label on item. Full figure portrait, to front, looking left, hands in front, right hand holding a handkerchief. Facsimile autograph has been added at left of Kean's feet. Paper bears a Whatman's watermark dated 1892. Pencilled numbers on recto and verso refer to provenance. Unsigned.
Artist: Item is attributed to Moblard due to its similarity to other works in the FSL collection signed by him. See other entries under Moblard and guide card for Augustus Toedteberg. No biographical information has yet come to light on Moblard. His work indicates that he was a watercolor copyist of rare prints.
History: Portrait is copied after an engraving designed by George Cruikshank, engraved by Alias and published by J. Roach in 1814. It is listed as item no.60 under Kean's entry in Harv. cat. FSL has an engraving, matching the Harv. description, which lacks imprint and engraver's name and may be a copy print rather than the original. (ART File K24.4 no.73a).
Subject: The label underneath the figure continues with the quotation 'I bleed Sir, but not kill'd.' Othello, Act V, Sc. 2. This quotation also appears on the engraving. Judging from the publication date of Cruikshank's portrait it may be assumed that the picture was taken from Kean's performance of Iago at Drury Lane in 1814. At this time Kean is noted as playing Iago and Othello on alternate nights. For a discussion of the role see Hillebrand's biography of Kean, p.128-131.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the collection of Augustus Toedteberg, pt.2, held by Anderson, Feb. 25-26, 1904. Item is listed as no.2118 in the catalog of that sale and the description gives it as a 'Watercolor Drawing ... after the original by George Cruikshank ...' Formerly catalogued as if by Cruikshank as ART Box C955 no.59.
