Title from bookseller. Folger copy is signed at left.
Artist: Artist attribution is taken from the signature and the bookseller, however the signature varies from examples of Gilbert's signatures in the FSL ms. collection. The painting technique is also dissimilar to examples of Gilbert's work.
History: Depiction matches a design by Gilbert executed as an illustration to the 1881 Staunton edition of Shakespeare's works, engraved by the Dalziel Bros. The illustration was used on p.111 above the printed text of Act V, Sc. 1, enter an old lady (friend to Anne Bullen, giving news of the birth of a daughter).
Subject: Bookseller described painting as depicting Queen Catherine petitioning King Henry for mercy, rather than noting the scene which the design illustrates in the Staunton edition.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. in March of 1928.
