Title derived from pencil note on back of drawing.
Drawing is on laid paper, the chain lines running horizontally. Paper has been cut from a larger sheet and the top edge is cut in the shape of an emblem design which bears lettering in ink 'K Richard III'. On recto, lower right corner of drawing in pencil: '32', lower left corner on border under drawing in ink: 'Stothard'. Item is hinged to a second piece of paper which is hinged to the mount of a French window mat. The pencil note on verso is repeated on mount backing. Drawing is matted with another sketch by Stothard for Winter's tale (ART Box S889 no.11). Signed (?) ; measurement includes border but not emblem, emblem measures 1 1/2 x 5/8 in.
History: Drawing was engraved by Sharpe for the frontispiece to The tragical history of King Richard III. Altered from Shakespeare by Colley Cibber ... marked with the variations in the manager's book at ... Drury Lane. London: Printed for T. & W. Lowndes ... 1784. (PR 2821 1784 copy 1 Sh.Col.). The engraving includes emblem at the top of the drawing and is lettered with the caption 'Despair and die.' (For separate copy of the engraving see ART File S528k8 no.44).
Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers as part of a collection of Shakespearean illustrations, from Maggs Bros., in Dec., 1922. Formerly ART Inv. 286 no.9 - Case 1112.

Subject: Richard is pictured asleep, his armour in left foreground, his crown on a table behind him, center. To the right of his head are six figures representing the various ghosts which appear to him in his dream before the battle of Bosworth Field. The quotation 'Despair and die' printed on the engraving is spoken by Lady Anne (Act V, Sc. 3, line 164).
