Note
Title devised by cataloger.
Artist: The works have been entered under Cruikshank junior because, though they are signed Geo. Cruikshank, the painting is very amateurish and does not appear to be the work of the elder Cruikshank. Cruikshank the younger is noted in Houfe as having done drawings which were weak imitations of his father. The auction catalog from which the works were purchased enters them under 'Shakespeare Illustrations' rather than Cruikshank and though it notes that they are signed 'Geo Cruikshank' the entry seems to show doubt in their minds.
Both paintings are signed Geo. Cruikshank and dated 1867. The subject is noted on the back of each Folger copy.
Provenance: Paintings were purchased from a sale held by the Anderson Galleries, April 24, 1922. Paintings are listed as item no.562 in the catalog of the sale.
Subject: The painting of Midsummer night's dream shows Bottom wearing the asses head, with Titania next to him, her arms around him. Two fairies are hovering around them. The painting of Romeo and Juliet shows Romeo standing outside the apothecary's shop holding a bag of gold. The apothecary is seen holding the drug out to Romeo.
