Artist: Artist attribution from pencil note on verso. Washes are similar to other works by Smirke.
History: Drawings were presumably designed as book illustrations, possibly as frontispieces to an edition of Shakespeare but they have not yet been traced to engraved images.
Items were previously housed together in a French window mat with two openings. In pencil on the mat (hidden by window), underneath first item: 'Tragedy/Robt. Smirke.' ; underneath second item 'Comedy/ Robert Smirke'. Items are executed in rondels on artist's board. In pencil on verso of Tragedy: 'R. Smirke' and '13', on verso of Comedy: 'R. Smirke R.A.' and '13'. The corners of both items have remnants of glue and the versos have residual paper as though drawings had been mounted previously in some other manner.
Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers as part of a collection of Shakespearean illustrations from Maggs Bros. in Dec. 1922. (Formerly ART Inv. 286 no.6 - Case 1112).
Subject: Tragedy is depicted seated in clouds, to left, face turned to left, looking at the mask of tragedy on which her right hand rests. Her left elbow rests on a cloud and her left arm supports a staff. Comedy is also pictured seated in clouds, turned half back to left, her left arm holds up the mask of Comedy and her right hand rests on a pair of musical pipes. Tragedy wears a crown and Comedy a wreath of flowers.
