Artist: Initials in the corner refer to George Cruikshank who was more likely the artist of the print from which this watercolor was copied.
Full figure portrait, to left, facing front, sword at side in left hand, right hand across breast. Title from lettering underneath portrait, initialed in lower left corner "G.Ck."
History: Portrait is taken after a print designed and engraved by George Cruikshank and published as a plate to the Meteor, April, 1814. The print was then forged by Pailthorpe who made the mistake of doing his copy from a clipped version of the print. Pailthorpe engraved the signature G.Ck. rather than G. Cruikshank as it had appeared on the original engraving. Therefore this watercolor copy is taken from the Pailthorpe forgery rather than from the original Cruikshank engraving. Engraving is no. 135 under Kean in Harv. cat.
Provenance: Cataloger has been unable to trace the provenance of this work. It is listed in the case list as "Edm. Kean as Richard III portrait n.d." and so was probably not sold to the Folgers as the work of Cruikshank.
