Summary
This famous depiction of an early English theater production shows seven performers on a stage that projects out into the audience, who are sitting at stage level on the front three sides, and above behind it. The performers are labeled, clockwise from top right: "Simpleton," "Clause," "French dancing Mr.," "Hostes," "Falstafe," "Changling," and a jester-type figure who emerges from the curtain at the back of the stage with a ribbon coming from his mouth with the words "Tuo quo que."
Note
Two versions of the frontispiece to The wits, or, sport upon sport, Pt.1.
There is confusion as to which version is for the original 1662 edition.-- see J.J. Elson, ed., The wits (1932) and Greg, Bibl. of Eng. printed drama, III, pl. cxxiii.
Although frequently described as the Red Bull Theatre, this view is generally not accepted.--See Elson, op. cit.
